Decoupage Glazes
!
Applicraft produce two glazes for creating an attractive cracked varnish or aged paint finish.
 Craquelure - small cracks

CRAQUELURE

This is a two-part water-based application made by applicraft which reproduces an attractive cracked varnish look. Once the varnish is dry, the cracks can be enhanced by rubbing wax over the surface. The size of cracks can vary - depending on how thick the top coat application is and how quickly the varnish dries. Being water-based, brush cleaning with soap & water is easy!

I would recommend a little experimenting is worthwhile before embarking on any ambitious projects as it can take a bit of practice to master the technique but well worth the effort in the end!

 Crackleglaze

 CRACKLEGLAZE

This is another water-based varnish - the difference being that this one is sandwiched between layers of contrasting paint colour. As the top layer of paint dries, it cracks, revealing the colour beneath.

For best results you will need to apply the glaze to a non-porous painted surface. I find two coats of water-based varnish or sealer over the first coat of paint usually does the trick! Now you can apply the crackleglaze varnish over the first coat of paint. Once this has dried, you are ready to apply the top coat of contrasting paint. This needs to be fairly runny and water-based for best results. The direction of your brush flow will also determine the direction of resulting cracks. Over-brushing is not recommended as this will cause lumps and distortions. As with the craquelure technique, a little experimentation will pay dividends in the end!
